He was living in 1638 in Rocky Knook, Kingston, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA. John died on 23 February 1673 at the age of 81 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA. He has Ancestral File Number LZK8-1X7. In Governor Bradford's account of the voyage of the Mayflower mentions several storms "And in one of them, 2s they lay at holl in a orighty storrn, a lusty young man called John Howland, coming upon some occasion above the gratings was, with a, seele of the ship, thrown into sea, but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards which hung overboard and ran out at length. Yet he held his hold (though he was sundry fathoms under water) till he was hauled up by the same rope to the brim of the water, and then with a boat hook and other means got into the ship again and his life saved. And though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after and became a, profitable member both in church and commonwealth."
John Howland was elected Plymouth Colony Assistant 1, January 1631/2, 1 Januaty 1733 /4, and 1 January 1634/5.
In April 1634 John Howland was in charge of the Plymouth Colony trading post at Kennebec [now in Maine] at the time of the Hocking incident. This is apparently the only known record of John Howland in Maine. It is unlikely that his family ever lived in Maine or that any of his children were born in Maine as had been suggested. (See MD 42:75-6)
