The Genealogy of the John Nash Family compiled by Mrs Roy J. Lytle, Mrs. Louis Willamon and Mrs. Fowler R. Yett. John Nash's father died when he was an infant and his sister was three years old. He does not mention any other brothers or sisters in his youth, but later he mentions that they visited a brother in New York City when they first arrived in the United States, an then again many years later. We also know that his mother re-married and had three more children.

John Nash was 21 years old when he married, and 41 when they moved to America. They spent 8 weeks at sea on a sailing ship, and it was during this time that they lost the youngest daughter, Mary. They spent the first winter in New Jersey, then went to Ohio to Licking County. Later he bought a farm there which he sold to his son, George T. Nash in 1880. At that time he was retired and moved to Mahaska County, IA. where they had two sons and three daughters.

The place is known as Ashburnham which is about 5 miles from the town of Battle in Sussex county England. Ashburnham's date back to the twelve century. Originally this estate was as large as 24,000 acres of land, but by 1953 down to 8,500 acres and the main house had 82 bedrooms. Also, located on the premise is the parish church, two very large stables, a large carriage house, an orangery built by "Capability" Brown in 1777, which has a Camellia plant 167 years old, and grounds of 37 gardens. Over time, due to taxes and operating expenses, the acreage was sold off to the current 220 acres. The facility is now a Christian conference and retreat center. The stables and carrigage house as well as the main house have all been modernly renovated to accomodate the current center. The main house was damaged in WW II, but also had severe dry rot so there is only the first level and a small portion of the second level left from the original 82 bedroom mansion. The grounds there are absolutely beautiful and the serenity of it all makes it a perfect place for it's current function.

I was told by the Ashburnham Administator, the town of Lewes (county seat), about 30 miles away would more than likely have historical information about my ggg grandfather and his wife Sarah Martin. Since we did not want to drive a rental car in the London area, we took a train to Battle/Ashburnham and was unable to visit Lewes. Perhaps next time. I did find in the local area phone book listings of 30 Nash's. Sarah MARTIN and John NASH Sr were married on 25 April 1822 in Hooe, Sussex, England.
