More About PHILIP FERREE: Burial: May 1753, Ferree-Carpenter Cemetery, Paradise. Lanc aster Co, PA Emigration: 1709, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA Ferree Reference No.: 02-006 Occupation: Silk Weaver Probate: July 26, 1753, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania After arrival in America, Philip made the acquaintance of several families at Esopus. He went there and hired on for one year at the farm of Abraham Du Bois. At the end of his year, he married Abraham's daughter, Leah at the First Dutch Church in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. He brought her to the Pequea settlement, where he began to improve a tract of land located on the north side of Pequea Creek. They began to cut grass for making hay. For a shelter, they placed timbers that were forked at the top, into the ground and laid poles across them. Hay was placed upon the frame and served as the roof. While living in this crude shelter their son, Abraham, was born. Around 1725, Philip built a small, one-story stone house off Old Leacock Road near what is now Route 30 East. Over the years it has had 3 additions and is now a grand looking house. It is now (2000) an antique shop. On March 2, 1743, Daniel Fiere and Anna Maria, his wife and Isaac LeFever had his wife Catherine conveyed unto Philip Fiere 383 2/3 acres of this tract; on April 4, 1743, Daniel Fiere conveyed to Isaac LeFever all his interest in 383 1/3 acres of the tract, and Isaac LeFever, on the same day, made a conveyance to Daniel Fiere, seemingly for a tract of larger size, and on June 9, 1747, these parties conveyed to John Fiere 2 tracts of 191 5/6 acres each of 383 2/3 . When the above conveyances had all been made, the result was about as follows: Daniel had about 532 acres and 24 perches, Isaac LeFever had 383 1/3 acres, Philip had about 575 acres and John had about 809 acres. In his will Philip gives to "Leah, my loving wife one complete feather bed, together with all my household goods in my possession at the time of my decease." He also orders that his sons, Abraham, Jacob, Philip and Joel (or their heirs) "do allow and give to my said wife all further necessaries suitable for her support and maintenance during her life fitting her station." To his daughter, Leah he leaves 300 pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania "provided that she does not marry Bryan Quin, and if she marry the said Bryan Quin, I give and bequeath to her the sum of 5 shillings." He gives to his granddaughter Elizabeth Ferree, daughter to Isaac Ferree and my own daughter Elizabeth, deceased "the sum of 150 pounds lawful money ". The money was to be paid 50 pounds at the age of 20, 50 pounds at the age of 21 and 50 pounds at the age of 22. Philip writes "the reason that gave my five sons and my daughter, Magdaline, wife of William Buffington, nothing of value in this my last will is because they have received their shares otherwise provided in my life time." His will is recorded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Will Book B, page 15.
