He supported himself by teaching and by publ ishing religious books that had been banned by the Englis h government. With another leader, William Bradford, he re turned to England in 1619 and secured a patent from the Vir ginia Company for a tract of land in America. He remaine d in England until September 16,1620, when he boarded the M ayflower for the trip to America. He was a signer of the M ayflower Compact and the Constitution of Plymouth Colony, a nd he continued as a leader of the colony until 1629, whe n an ordained minister was appointed.
