Among the first people who began the great migration into K entucky were Daniel Sullivan and his brother James. They ha d settled, by the close of the year 1780, at a point on th e Ohio River near the present city of Louisville, Jefferso n County,, Kentucky. They founded Sullivan's Station on th e Beargrass River. ( Mrs. F. LO. Deane)

Daniel was a man of marked contrasts. He was, no doubt, typ ical of the early pioneers who dealt with the Indians. He w as directly connected with every Indian movement from 178 0 until his death in 1791. He reported to Colonel John Cann on from Fort Pitt, March 20, 1778 on his experience of havi ng been sent, as a spy, to see for sure if General Hamilto n was buying scalps of Americans. In his report he swore th is was the case. He was arrested as a spy, committed to th e guard, loaded with chains, hand and foot, and in seventee n days was sent to Niagra and then on to Montreal and Quebe c. In 1782, while going to Fort Pitt from Kentucky, he wa s present at the siege of Wheeling and was there wounded. Included in his report as a spy he stated he had been take n prisoner when young by the Delawae Indians in 1763 or 176 4, and that in 1772 or 1773 he went to live with his relati ves in Virginia. The records show that Daniel acted as a f riend toward the peaceful Delawares, but to other Indians h e was a fierce enemy.

After settling in Kentucky, he was off again to attempt t o settle near present day Vincennes, Indiana. It is doubtf ul that he took his family with him as the area was under a lmost constant attacks from the Indians.

According to family tradition, Daniel Sullivan, Sr. was kil led by a party of Indians near Vincennes, Indiana. The Chie fs, in solemn council and with religious significance, at e his heart raw in the belief that his bravery and strengt h would be transmitted to them. Out of respect for braver y in all men, they carved out a wooden heart which they ins erted into his body and in tribute to a brave man, sent th e body back to the settlement for a white man's burial. Thi s wooden heart was kept in the family and the last possesso r was Ellen Magill, a great granddaughter, who lived in Flo rissant, Missouri.

The records show that his death occurred in 1790.
